The program aims to provide detailed knowledge and understanding of the unique circumstances associated with the prescribing of drugs to athletes within a sporting context.
On completion of the program, students should:
1. Appreciate the unique requirements for prescribing drugs to athletes in a sporting environment
2. Apply a systematic approach to the pharmacological treatment of medical conditions frequently encountered by athletes, including sports injuries
3. Know the content and regulations associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List
4. Understand how to choose medication options permitted in sport, or apply for Therapeutic Use Exemptions if prohibited medications are necessary
5. Understand the role of prescribers in doping prevention
6. Apply an evidence-based approach to advising on the benefits and risks of supplement use by athletes
7. Appreciate the professional and ethical responsibilities of sports physicians when prescribing for athletes
8. Be competent to prescribe within medical services at major sporting events
